Turkish defense minister expected to arrive in Mogadishu

A high-level delegation led by Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, his deputy and Armed Forces Chief Yassar Guler are expected in the Somali capital on Wednesday.

According to sources, the main aim of the visit is to assess the needs of Somali military and give necessary support to the Federal government Somalia.

The delegation is scheduled to carry out a similar assessment in Sudan and Libya to help strengthen military cooperation.

The Republic of Turkey is the very close ally of the Federal Republic of Somalia since the high profile visit of President Rajab Erdogan on August 2011 to show support for the victims of drought and famine in the country.

Ankara has also very close diplomatic and defense cooperation with Mogadishu strengthened by the one of the biggest embassy and military academy to train Somali armed forces.

More than sixty Somali military officials were airlifted to Istanbul for expert training by Ankara weeks ago, a sign of commitment by President Erdogan government in an effort to rebuild the quality of Somali armed forces in their quest to defeat an insurgency in the country.
