At least two Ugandan soldiers working under the umbrella of African Union Mission In Somalia  (AMISOM) were killed in an ambush by Al-Shabaab fighters in Lower Shabelle, Ugandan military said on Wednesday.

AMISOM convoy travelling in Marka town has come under attack which prompted clashes between the forces and the assailants.

Lt.-Col. Deo Akiiki, Uganda’s deputy military spokesperson said his country lost two soldiers in an Al-Shabaab attack on AMISOM convoy.

“I can confirm there was an ambush on our troops, who were on patrol in Marka and we lost two soldiers. We also have some injuries,” Akiiki said.

The official did not disclose the number of the injures Ugandan soldiers sustained during the attack saying AU is still assessing the matter.

“We are waiting for the details, names of deceased soldiers and injured from AMISOM so that we inform their next of kin and family,” he stated.

Uganda, which first sent troops to the country in 2007, is the biggest contributor with more than 6,000 soldiers in the force.

At the moment there are more than 20,000 soldiers serving in the AU mission.
