Mogadishu mayor praises Police for swift response to shooting incident

The mayor of Mogadishu and the Governor of Benadir Region, Eng Abdirahman Omar Osman Yarisow has commended Somali Police force for a swift response to a shooting incident in Hamarweyne district.

The mayor said the Police managed to arrest suspects for the killing of a local businessman identified as Aweys Macko in Hamarweyne’s Koodka area last night following a manhunt in the crime scene.

Unknown gunmen have shot dead the businessman and escaped the area before the arrival of the Somali security forces. It’s not yet clear the motive behind the murder, but, Police say an investigation was still underway.

Mogadishu has witnessed rising assassinations in the past few months, as new Police and Intelligence chiefs took office last month after the cabinet endorsed them to replace former bosses who were sacked last October.

Al Shabaab has stepped up its attacks in the capital since the appointment of the new Police and NISA commanders and carried out twin car bomb attack targeting Villa Somalia, the country’s Presidential Palace last month.

The attack has left at least 45 people, including soldiers dead, while scores were wounded.
