Puntland President blames local traders for supporting Al shabaab

President of Somalia’s northeastern semi-autonomous region of Puntland Abiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas has accused the local businessman community of supporting Al shabaab.

Speaking at a press conference in the port city of Bosaso, President Gaas said some of the traders pay taxation to Al shabaab, in fear of their punishment instead of his administration.

“The traders who pay the tax to Al shabaab are same the militants we are fighting, because they are financing the terrorists,” said Puntland President Abweli Gaas.

The President added that a section of the business people rejected to pay the tax to Puntland state; instead they give it to Al shabaab in fear of the group’s threats.

The President’s accusation came after traders in Bosaso, the regional capital of Bari region shut down their business centers last week, in protest of increased tax by the local authorizes.
