Al-shabab seizes Gofgadud town after deadly gunfight

Al shabaab has wrested full control of the strategic town of Goofgaduud near Baidoa city after a deadly battle with Southwest and Somali government troops on Tuesday morning.

The militants mounted in pickups and armed with heavy-arms raided the town, before seizing its control. The attack has sparked hours-long gunfight which left 4 soldiers dead.

Reports from the town indicate that Al shabaab has burnt down a military vehicle, and seized two others during the raid against the army barracks of Somali forces.

The allied troops retreated to Baidoa after the were pushed out of the district.

Local residents said at least five soldiers were killed after a land mine blast has ripped through their convoy between Goofgaduud and Baidoa town early in the morning.
