Sports minister elected MP despite disqualification

The caretaker minister for youth and sports of the federal government Mohamed Abdullahi Nuh was elected despite disqualification for malpractices, intimidation and electoral violence.

The minister was among five seats annulled by the Independent disputes body over electoral fraud. They have been picked up again in re-contested seat for HirShabelle in Mogadishu.

Mr Nuuh has retained his seat of the Lower house, after defeating his rival contender Hinda Abdullahi Omar with majority 43 votes, against one vote she got during the ballot.

Last December, the minister was disqualified from the race following shooting at a polling site in Jowhar, the regional capital of HirShabelle which left at least three people injured.

Despite the ban, the outgoing minister is expected to be sworn-in Sunday in the Parliament hall, and attend the forthcoming voting for the new president scheduled on February 8.
