Urgent appeal for aid as Drought hits Galgaduud

An elder in central Somalia has appealed for an urgent humanitarian aid to help hundreds of thousands of people affected by droughts exacerbated by lack of sufficient rainfall over a long time period.

The drought has severely effected in parts of the country’s Galgaduud region, mainly El-bur, El-deer and Galhareeri towns, where thousands of people are facing acute food insecurity and water shortages.

Speaking to Radio Shabelle over the phone, Mohamed Osman Ollow, an elder in central Somalia said the humanitarian situation is getting worse as people are starving to death due to the exacerbating famine.

The elder has appeal to the Somali people and international aid agencies to help the suffering people. Several regions in northern Somalia are reported to have been hit by famine.

In September, aid agencies including UN-OCHA, said that five million Somalis – more than 40 per cent of the country’s population – did not have sufficient food.
