Political heavyweight Adow Ali Geesey joins race to be Somali President as “Change Candidate”

A political heavyweight Abdullahi Ali Ahmed, widely known Adow Ali Geesey, has become the latest candidate to jump into the 2016 race for Villa Somalia, ending months of speculation after he pledged to offer an alternative to the current political establishment.

“I’ve seen the emptiness of our political system from the inside. Somalia needs a new leadership, and I’m a candidate for president because I believe more than anything that we all Somalis can succeed, that Somalia can and must succeed” said Adow Ali Geesey.

Adow who is a prominent entrepreneur and a member of the Federal Parliament, declared to create a fair and less-divided nation while giving security reform and justice as key areas of his manifesto. “I am a change candidate”.

“My campaign wants a government that represents all of the people. Not just the few people on top. I’m committed to building a fairer Somalia. We need to eliminate corruption and abuse of power in Somalia, particularly in the federal governance system” asserted the presidential hopeful.

Adow’s announcement of his presidential ambitions is a heavy body blow to outgoing President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud because Adow has been main financier of President Mohamud.

“Winning the parliamentary seat in Adaado was the lynchpin of my campaign. I think at the moment we have got very considerable problems in the national leadership. We have got to make changes”. Adow Ali Geesey declared that he would self-fund his presidential campaign.

The battle to become the next President of Somalia is hotting up after Somalia’s 10th parliament was sworn-in on Tuesday and several presidential candidates already threw their hats into the ring.

Observers and parliamentarians said Adow’s candidacy is fading chances for Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to be re-elected as president, both financially and strategically, given that Adow was the main designer of the power base of outgoing President.
