Puntland extends an olive branch to Galmudug state
Puntland state president Abdiwali Mohamed Ali Gaas has announced on Saturday a peace initiative to end the ongoing conflict in Galkayo in central Somalia that left hundreds dead.
Speaking at the opening of the 38th session of Puntland parliament in Garowe, Mr Gaas said his administration is committed to resume the peace talks with its neighboring Galmudug.
Recent fighting between Galmudug and Puntland forces has led to the death of hunderds of civilians and displacement of thousands of families, according to local officials.
Both Puntland and Galmudug failed to implement a prior peace deal signed in December, 2015 under the auspices of Somali PM and the international community representatives.
