Somalia: Fierce fighting renews in Galkayo city
A Heavy fighting between Galmudug and Puntland forces has erupted again on Monday morning in Galkayo town, the provincial capital of Mudug region, locals said.
According to local residents, the battle broke out at around 7:00 am local time in Garsoor village, north of the city, where both sides have army base camps. Heavy artillery and gunshots could be heard across the town.
There were no immediate details of casualties. On Saturday more than 15 were killed in clashes between the two sides, mostly were soldiers from Galmudug and Puntland forces.
Galkayo has been hit by frequent clashes between the opposing troops loyal to the regional states of Puntland and Galmudug who are in deadlock over the city’s control.
The central town is divided into areas, with northern portion is ruled by Puntland and the southern is administrated by Galmudug state of Somalia.
