Somali military officer defects to Al shabaab
Al shabaab has claimed on Thursday to be holding a Somali military commander who surrendered to them in the country’s south-western Gedo region.
Somalia’s Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabab armed group has paraded the surrendered army officer who was the head of Somali military intelligence head.
The officer who has been identified as Mohamed Aden Ali Barre is now in Al shabaab custody in the militants-held El Adde village in Gedo region.
“I was the head of Somali military’s logistics and intelligence before I decided to defect Al shabaab,” said Barre in a statement published on Al shabaab website.
Somali military officials have not yet commented on the give up of the commander to Al shabaab side.
