Kenya assures on anti-al shabaab fight

President Uhuru Kenyatta has assured Kenyans that the country is well prepared to counter the threats of terrorism. Speaking during the closing ceremony of a bilateral military training exercise between Kenya Defence Forces and the Royal Jordan Armed Forces, the Head of State cited terrorism as one of the biggest threats facing the region.

He reiterated that the memorandum of understanding signed between Kenya and Jordan will provide for military cooperation and counterterrorism. “Our forces are now more than ready for the real operation should the need arise,” he said shortly after witnessing the enactment of joint military operation at a ceremony in Embakasi Garrison.

The training is expected to boost and equip the Kenyan military to have quick reaction capability in responding to threats of terrorism and lawlessness. This comes at a time when the country is battling with acts of terrorism, especially along the restive border of north eastern where al Shabaab militants have executed several attacks.

Uhuru, who was accompanied by Jordanian King Abdullah II, said Jordan has trained 60 pilots and hopes to train other 38 by February next year in an effort aimed at boosting the country’s air force operation.

“Our cooperation is underpinned by our common interests. Together we must fight against emerging security threats,” he said. The Jordanian King underscored the need for concerted effort for enhancing inter-operate ability and cooperation in future.

Others who were present during the event included Defence Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo, her Internal Security counterpart Joseph Nkaissery and Chief of Defence Forces General Samson Mwathathe.
