Somalia: Hundreds flee violence in Marka city

Hundreds of local residents, including women and children began to flee their houses in the coastal town of Marka, due to escalating clan tensions and frequent Al shabaab attacks, according to reports.

Many of the refugees have sought shelter in nearby villages, to escape the conflict raging on in the town which fell to Al shabaab for several times in the past following Somali troops retreats.

On Friday, several local villagers were killed in clan revenge, sparking new escalation of fighting between two armed tribal militiamen who have fought for city’s control over the past four years.

Somali army, backed by African Union mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops have wrested control of the seaside town from Al shabaab militants in 2012, following a joint military offensive.
