Somali troops ‘retake’ El Wak town from Al Shabaab

Somali National Army (SNA) soldiers have retaken El wak town in Gedo region from Al Shabaab militants who seized the port city on Friday, residents said on Saturday.

A resident in El Wak said Al Shabaab fighters in fighting vehicles have moved out of the town late on Friday night, towards El Adde village. Somali army regained the city shortly after Al shabaab withdrawal.

Al Shabab fighters hoisted their black flag on the town’s administrative headquarters and spoke to residents as fighters as they took positions in and around the town on Friday afternoon.

Nearly 10 Somali soldiers, including high-ranking commander were killed Friday’s attack on El Wak city by Al Shabaab fighters, according to the resident who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Despite being forced out of Mogadishu in 2011, Al-Shabaab still has a presence in large areas of the south and central of the country, and capable of carrying out attacks on Somali army and AMISOM bases.
