Injured UPDF soldier dies at JKIA on arrival from Somalia

A Ugandan soldier attached to the African Union mission in Somalia (Amisom) died at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Tuesday night just 10 minutes after he landed.

The soldier and three others had been airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment after their vehicle was hit by a landmine in the seaport town of Barawe, about 220 kilometres south of the capital Mogadishu.

A report by the Kenya Airports Police Unit indicated that a United Nations aircraft, registration number UN 657P, landed at Terminal 2 on Tuesday night at around 9.17pm with the injured peacekeepers.

At around 9.30pm, a Uganda People’s Defence Forces doctor, Captain Richard Mwase, pronounced the injured soldier dead.

The soldier has been identified as Amos Mugisha while his injured colleagues are Dennis Bwanika, Paul Kyakuse and Jimmy Okello.

The body was transferred to the Lorna Funeral Home in Nairobi.
