IGAD heads of state summit kicks off in Mogadishu

The summit of the heads of state of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has opened in Mogadishu Tuesday (13 September, 2016).

Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has officially opened the summit at a private hotel outside Mogadishu airport, with the presence of leaders from Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia.

The high-level meeting is the first IGAD heads of state summit to be held in Somali capital, Mogadishu for the first time since the regional bloc was established in 1986.

The summit kicked off on Tuesday in Mogadishu with the absence of some of the seven member states, including Djibouti and South Sudan and Sudan.

The overall security of Mogadishu has been tightened, for fear of attacks from Al-Shabaab fighters who have in the past carried out deadly attacks in Mogadishu.
