Death toll in Banadir beach restaurant attack rises to 15

Nearly 15 people are confirmed to have been killed, and 20 others wounded in car bomb, and gun attack on Banadir beach restaurant in Somali capital, Mogadishu on Thursday night.

The attack began with massive car bomb blast at the gates of the beachfront restaurant, then gunmen have fought their way onto the building, taking customers as hostages.

Afterwards, Somali elite forces have cordoned off the scene and launched an operation that lasted for 8-hours long hours in the midnight. During the operation, 20 people were rescued.

Reports say between 3-4 Al Shabaab attackers have entered the restaurant building and engaged heavy gunfire with Somali security forces throughout the night,  police officer said.

Security officials say up to ten people, including five restaurant staff members, 4-5 attackers and soldiers were killed during the night-time attack and the operation.

Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, according to Sheikh Abdiaziz Abu Musab who spoke to Reuters by phone. He said they killed government officials in the attack.
