Somalia to hold national burial for late defense minister

A chartered plane carrying the body of late former Somali defense minister Gen Mohamed Ali Samatar is set to arrive at Aden Adde International airport in Mogadishu on Thursday (August 25, 2016).

Somali government has formed a national level committee  to organize the funeral and the burial event for Mohamed Ali Samatar which is expected to be held in Mogadishu next week.

General Mohamed Ali Samatar who served as defense minister, vice president and prime minister during Siad Barre’s administration, died in a hospital in US earlier this week at the age of 85.

Senior Somali government officials are at Mogadishu airport to welcome home the body of Mohamed Ali Samatar who will be laid to rest in a state funeral in the capital.

Reports said Somali parliament speaker Mohaed Sheikh Osman Jawari who is now acting president since Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is overseas visit ordered the lowering of the nation’s flags to half-staff  for the next three days to honor the death of Samatar.
