AU condemns Al shabaab attack in northern Galkayo

African Union (AU) Commissioner for Peace and Security Ambassador Smail Chergui has strongly condemned Sunday’s deadly suicide attacks in Galkayo city in central Somalia.

In a Twitter post, Mr Chergui said he learnt with sadness news of the heinous attack targeting innocent civilians, Puntland Forces in Galkayo’s administrative headquarters.

“We strongly condemn today’s terrorist attacks in Galkayo, in central Somalia and extend condolences to families of victims & the people of Somalia,” Chergui said in Twitter feed.

He said Galkayo attack was desperate attempt by Al Shabaab to seek relevance, following the massive defeats they continue to suffer from the Somali Army and AMISOM troops.

Sunday’s attack in northern Galkayo has drawn regional and international condemnations.

Somali president Hassan Sheikh and his prime minister Omar Abdirashid have similary condemned the Al Shabaab attack in Galkayo, describing it ‘heinous and barbaric.’

Al Shabaab said it was behind the attack on Puntland’s municipality HQ in northern Galkayo, killing at least 20 people, including the city’s head of taxation Khadar Dhubane.
