Al Shabaab fires mortars on AU peacekeepers’ base

Al Shabaab has fired mortar rounds on Burundian peacekeepers’ military base at Elasha Biyaha area, about 18 kilometers south-west of Mogadishu on Friday mid-night.

The overnight mortar attack has sparked a fierce gunfight  between Al Shabaab fighters and Burundian soldiers who are serving under the African Union mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

Dahir Omar, a villager at Elasha Biyaha nighbourhood, told Radio Shabelle over the phone that the attack began late last night at 12:30 A.M. and continued until Saturday morning.

“We woke up to the heavy mortar shelling followed by gunfire exchanged by Al Shabaab and Burundian troops on AMISOM contingent at Elasha Biyaha area last night,” Omar added.

Meanwhile, there was no immediate report of casualties on both sides and civilians as Al Shabaab and AMISOM did comment on the attack and the fatalities.
