Khatumo State opens direct talks with Somaliland

The northern Semi-autonomous state of Khatumo has for the first time opened peace talks with its arch-rival Somaliland, to end the long-running conflict in Sool, Sanag and Ayn regions, speaker said.

Speaking to Radio Shabelle over the phone, the parliament speaker of Khatumo State Mohamud Sheikh Omar said representatives from both sides met in Aynabo area in Sool region and discussed their differences.

He said the preliminary talks will pave the way to defuse the conflict between Somaliland and Khatumo state, two regional administrations in northern Somalia.

The two nighbouring states have been in locked in an escalating row over the ownership of Sool, Sanaag and Ayn known as SSC. The hostility between the warring sides has led to uproar.
