Dozens arrested in Somalia security sweep

Somali security forces, with the support of African Union peacekeepers have launched a joint sweep in Jalalaqsi town in central Somalia, arresting dozens of Al Shabaab suspects.

The dawn operation in Jalalaqsi district comes after security forces were tipped off that militants sneaked into the vicinity, which has seen several raids by Al-Shabab fighters.

Somali security officials in the town, told Radio Shabelle that soldiers made house-to-house search operations in which scores of people, linked to the Al Shabaab were arrested.

The suspects are currently being questioned at the city’s police station.

However, they urged the public to collaborate with security forces and to tip-off all the details of those who are terrorising the security of the city.

Al-Shabaab carried out multiple deadly attacks in Somalia for the past few years, highlighting security challenges faced by the UN-backed weak government protected by the African Union forces in Somalia.
