Somali forces shut Radio Shabelle bureau in Jowhar

The security forces of the federal republic government of Somalia have shut down the Radio Shabelle’s bureau in Jowhar,  and ordered the staff to the leave the town on Sunday.

Radio Shabelle bureau chief in Jowhar Mohamed Abukar says the local journalists are fleeing  Jowhar after having faced increasing threat and pressure from Somali security forces.

Two journalists were arrested on Saturday by the Somali army during a crackdown on press freedom in Jowhar city, the regional capital of Middle Shabelle region in southern Somalia.

The forces have shut down Radio Shabelle office and City Fm station, according to our correspondent who said the move is part of  the “intimidation and oppression” the media faces in the city.

He the arbitrary arrests, intimidation and acts of oppression by the National security forces have been on increase in the past few weeks and the authorities did not provide details on the media crackdown.

Despite constant threats, Somalia’s journalists remain resilient and push for a Somali free from oppression and risk lives to report news on the ground.
