World Humanitarian Summit Kicks off in Turkey & Somalia President Delivers SpeechThe first World Humanitarian Summit kicked off on Monday in the Turkish capital Istanbul with the participation of 50 heads of state and government.

Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, who is one of the heads of state attending the summit, delivered a speech this morning at the Leaders Segment and at the high level roundtable on the topic of Changing People’s Lives – From Delivering Aid to Ending Need.

Mr Mohamoud said that ‘’we need to help those affected by the natural disasters’’.

After the summit, a special session on the humanitarian situation in Somalia will be held.

The Summit is an initiative of the U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. It is the first event of its kind in the 70-year history of the U.N., making a direct call to world leaders to rally together and commit to ending human suffering by addressing the most urgent humanitarian challenges.

This first-ever summit is expected to mark a turning point in how the international community prepares and faces crises, conflicts, natural disasters and population movements to prevent human suffering.

It will also provide an essential platform to take up the challenges facing the humanitarian system.
