5 dead in Car bomb attack near Somalia Traffic Police HQ
At least five people were killed and eight others wounded in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Monday when a car laden with explosives detonated near the headquarters of Traffic Police, officials confirm.
Two of those killed were suicide bombers, who had planned to carryout execution-style killing moments after the explosion, Benadir regional spokesman Abdifatah Halane told reporters.
‘’ Police officers shot dead one of the suicide bombers who wanted to enter the headquarters of the Traffic police and carryout mass killings.’’
No group has yet claimed the responsibility of the attack, but fingers will be pointed out to the extremist group al-Shabaab. It has carried out similar attacks in the past.
Al Shabaab insurgents have staged a string of assaults in their fight to overthrow the country’s internationally-backed government. They have targeted hotels, the international airport, Villa Somalia, a United Nations compound and restaurants in a bid to discredit claims by the authorities and AU troops that they are winning the war.
